WebDAV Goes, DeltaSynch Arrives

I woke up this morning to be greeted by a nice message from my friends at Microsoft, at last the time has come for the WebDAV protocol (This is how GetMail accesses your Hotmail account) to be retired on the 30th of June 2008. To be fair to Microsoft they did try this once
before in 2004 but were met with such levels of complaint that they backed down, this doesn't look likely to happen this time. Instead of just removing WebDAV they have decided to replace one proprietary protocol with....yet another proprietary protocol, this time called DeltaSynch. Once again Microsoft shy away from using the
open protocols that are industry standard and invent their own creating a closed shop when it comes to people trying to access their e-mail. Find out more...

Why Email Forwarding Software Is Still A Good Option

There was once a time when GetMail and a few other similar programs were the only way of having your e-mail forwarding out of your Hotmail account onto another. Things have changed quite a lot over the last couple of years though and now besides the software options there are a number of services that have cropped up which will do the same thing for you albeit from a hosted server. I did try and setup my own service several times but the real problem came down to cost, where I am based internet services including the dedicated servers I would require are hugely expensive, there is no way I could create a cost effective service with those overheads. In the end I've teamed up with a service that mainly specialises in AOL forwarding (AOL is just as backwards as Hotmail) to promote hosted Hotmail forwarding.

GMail Introduce IMAP Protocol

Gmail revolutionised free e-mail when it was first released, this week with the introduction of the IMAP e-mail access protocol they've just taken it to a whole new level.
What is IMAP

IMAP stands for Internet Message Access Protocol and it is everything to e-mail access that POP3 is not. IMAP basically only allows one copy of an internet message (e-mail) to be kept. In short this means whatever you do to that message reflects across every e-mail client you use.
How Does GMail Introducing IMAP Benefit Me?
It all depends on how you access your e-mail. If like me you like to use Outlook, a Mobile phone, GMail's web interface depending on where you are then it means no more duplicate messages or worrying if you've already dealt with an e-mail. Whatever you do in one client (e.g. your phone) will be reflected across the board. I used to spend 20 minutes every day just marking as read messages that I had dealt with, for mobile professionals the introduction of a free IMAP system is huge. Not only that but GMail provides you with more than enough storage to make it worth while. If you've only ever previously used POP3 to download a copy of the e-mail your in for a treat!
