Gmail is king, Yahoo Mail is old news. However there are still millions of Yahoo Mail accounts in use because people struggle with the notion of moving between mail providers. Don’t worry, switching from Yahoo Mail to Gmail doesn’t require a computer science degree! This guide will explain the process in simple steps, helping you migrate smoothly.

When I first started using e-mail there wasn’t really any such thing as webmail, you popped your ISP e-mail address using an e-mail client. The client software was in general easy to use and functional. Then came the revolution, courtesy for me anyway in the form of Hotmail. Get at your e-mail anywhere in the world was the promise and I bought into it straight away!
Over the last month or so I have been asked to help out a couple of times where people have been having problems reading Hotmail on their mobile phone. The first thing I’d suggest is that if this is at all business related then you just shouldn’t be using Hotmail. It only costs $5 a month to host your own e-mail domain (whether you want a website or not). In saying that it is easily possible to get access to your Hotmail on your mobile phone, a lot of the time the problem appears to relate to people not actually using the technology to its full potential OR adding more steps than are necessary.
Perhaps your idea of protecting your e-mail is to ask your employees not to say anything in a message that would reveal your company’s deepest darkest secrets or maybe greatest plans! Or perhaps you’re already using more sophisticated practices than this. In either case, there is innovative technology to encrypt and manage your employees’ e-mail in ways your employees otherwise couldn’t or wouldn’t.
Having been a Hotmail user for years and a GMail users for months I was surprised recently to discover that there are still a lot of people who are not aware that GMail even exists never mind the advantages that it holds over the other webmail systems. A lot of my more tech-savvy friends have already switched from Hotmail to Gmail, all of our e-mail is handled via Gmail but what about the normal man on the street? For example my daughter recently did an address swap with some new friends that she had made, her address was a Gmail account but all of her friends were using Hotmail and had no idea that anything other than Hotmail even existed!
No matter which way you look at it, in general terms business application software developers have a bad reputation. Systems are almost inevitably delivered late or even not at all. The average user in the average company will spend quite literally hours every week bitching about the computer systems they are forced to endure. “Why’s it done that?”,” What the hell does that mean?” are a couple of the things that I hear on a daily basis.
GetMail has evolved, it started as something that was very simple, now it is very complicated. Unfortunately software made this way can sometimes fail in the user interface department. The biggest criticism of the program is how difficult it is to set up extra accounts (Hotmail/MSN/POP3) to be forwarded. The final plan is to have this changed over to a wizard style interface but I have no timeline for this at the moment. There is too much information here to put onto the FAQ page so I figured I’d do a quick article to explain the best way to go about forwarding multiple accounts with GetMail.

The one question I get asked more than any other is just that, why doesn’t GetMail support all Hotmail accounts and the new Windows Live Mail (Kahuna) accounts?
I’ve checked my Errorlog.txt and I get consistent Error Code 10061 warnings?
Error 10061 means 1 of 2 things is occuring. Either firstly the server you are trying to communicate with has rejected the communication (failed). This is very rare and would only ever show intermittently. Consistent errors indicate that “something” (AV, Anti-Spam, Firewall) is stopping communication between GetMail and the server. GetMail for Hotmail has successfully reached the server but the servers response has not reached GetMail. There is nothing I can do to help with this other than suggest you try disabling each piece of software and your firewall in turn to try and pin-point what is stopping the communication and of course re-iterate that GetMail must have the rights to do what it needs to do! Consistent 10061 errors are not a GetMail software error but rather something very localised to your setup.
Does GetMail work with Proxy servers?
As from version 2.5 Getmail is compatible with SOCKS proxy servers.
